It lets you connect to another computer and display its live remote desktop or control the remote computer. TIGHTVNC COMMAND LINE VIEW ONLY ICON

The main arguments to look at are: "-encoding tight": This is the default value and the argument that gives the lowest transferred data volume. It's what you need if you are taking control remotely via a modem or ISDN line.

It will however cause a fair amount of latency due to the compression and expansion stages. It is no doubt your best bet for a local area network, whatever its configuration. This limits the color depth to 8 bits, i. You'll lose out a little on quality, but you will win in terms of required bandwidth, hence speed.

JPEG quality can be set to between 0 and 9, with 0 being "worst" and 9 being "best". The compression ratio can be set to between 1 and 9, with 1 being "mildest compression" and 9 being "strongest compression". Here are some examples: "-compresslevel 9 -quality 0" will give full-strength data compression with a more or less lousy image, but the volumes transferred will be quite trivial. Example of some command line combinations: "-encoding tight -compresslevel 6 -quality 6": The default setting!

Using in conjunction with Zebedee As is the case with all tunneling software, packets are compressed before sending them through tunnels. To perform this compression, processor resources are of course required. Moreover, TightVNC itself uses all sorts of compression algorithms to reduce the size of the images going through the "pipe" to the controlling machine.

This tool requires processor resources. But here's the rub: compressing data that's already compressed often leads to an increase in size, so you lose out twice! In particular, it includes management of transparency effects OS Vista and higher, Office menu button To copy the driver installation file on the remote host, please verify in the TightVNC remote control configuration General tab , that the box "Copy video driver DemoForge Mirage when installing the service is checked.

Then, after having launched the TightVNC control on the remote host, the driver could be automatically and silently installed, directly from the TightVNC viewer "Mirror video driver manager" button. Depending on the remote host OS, you will be probably asked to certify the program via the "publisher verification of the driver software" window. Then please click on "Install this driver software anyway". It may be necessary to re-launch TightVNC so that the driver is supported after installation.

However, be careful because known compatibility problems may arise in some configurations and OS read more. Note: This page has been updated in our new Support Portal - try it here! This page provides basic instructions for installing and configuring generic VNC Server applications. There are many different applications available that can function as VNC servers. TightVNC is a mature, freely-available option that has existed since VNC clients and servers from different companies often work together as well, though some companies develop proprietary versions.

It is recommended you check with your PC vendor for any available driver and other software updates and install them. For PCs running Windows 7 or older, it is also recommended to install the DFMirage Driver , available from the same Download page, for improved performance and responsiveness.

As an application, TightVNC is started either manually or automatically after user login, and runs only for that user. As a service, TightVNC starts automatically when Windows boots, and runs no matter which user is logged in.

By default, TightVNC will capture and broadcast all displays on a system as a single feed.

So I guess I may be ordering one of the headless adapters you guys sent links to. I have confirmed that having a monitor attached allows me to VNC into the W10 machine and simply detaching the VGA cable kills the display on VNC and freezes at the last image until the monitor is reconnected. So now I have to physically connect a monitor also just to get video out as the splitter to CAT-5 does not activate W10 video output I am curious if there are any software emulators for a display instead of having to use a hardware one.

Anybody know about that? I know some graphics adapters will shut down the GPU without anything connected to the output. I know this from video encoding where if I want all of the GPU operational they need the headless adapter installed. I made several mentions of the mirage driver, are you using this driver from the TightVNC web site?

This adds in a virtual video adapter. We've been using it since the Win7 days and continue to use it with Win I'm not saying this will fix your issue, but we can and do run headless with our Dell computers both desktop and laptops. I installed the mirage driver, and it shows as a display adapter. It does not at this point show another monitor except for the physical monitor, and disconnecting monitor gives same results. I have looked to see if there is a way to configure the mirage driver to add a fake monitor, but I can't figure out how to.

So I guess I'm not sure I've got Mirage setup correctly Is this computer using onboard graphics or an add-in card? In both of my machines, I have add-in cards. One is a Quardro and one is a FirePro. Both are around vintage.

If you're using onboard graphics and have a spare card laying around, it would give you something to try. Not going to be an option. Its a brand new HP prodesk and would need like a half height card, plus IDK if it even has an expansion port for graphics. Either way, I'm not buying a GPU to try this with, I'll end up pulling an old 17" square monitor out of the junk pile and hooking it up if I can't get any other solution working.

Thanks for the idea though. From what i understand the mirage drive will act like a video card and let vnc talk to it. But if you added it and still no joy then the GPU powering off may need that headless adapter. One other thought, in the firmware can't call it bios anymore for the graphics card, is there an auto mode where you can pick the default adapter?

I don't know HP but on some dells you can force the firmware to use the inboard GPU vs one on the riser card. I wonder if forcing the firmware to use the onboard one will make it behave differently. It just refused to operate until we discovered the headless adaptor. Although I must admit the mirage driver also sounds interesting. Previous TightVNC version 1. You should enable "port forwarding" in your router's configuration. Port forwarding allows passing external connections to computers in the internal network. Almost all routers support this type of redirection.

For example, to access VNC or TightVNC server running on default ports, a router can be configured such way that TCP connections to ports and would be passed to the same ports of a particular machine with a specified private IP address typically Here is an example of configuring port forwarding, assuming that TightVNC Server is running on default ports and , on the machine with IP When port forwarding is set up, you can connect to the router's IP address such way as if it was your target machine's IP address, but you should specify those port numbers on which port forwarding was activated.

To solve this problem, we have plans to implement built-in encryption in future versions of TightVNC. But please note that hiding the icon is usually not a good idea. For example, if you want to restrict users from changing the server Properties, it might be better to use the AllowProperties setting.

Currently, we do not offer a version for Mac OS X. It's very likely that TightVNC will include one in the future, but not in the nearest days. Currently, our team is busy working on the Windows version.
